3 Affordable Days

Have you ever noticed that in the Hemisphere's magazine, the "3 Perfect Days" information is nice reading, if you earn the salary of a corporate CEO. So we decided to build "3 Affordable days". Each month we will focus on a different destination and ask for your help in sharing your experience with other Villagers.

Honolulu, HI

CHEAP EATS
New Kapahulu Chop Suey (730 Kapahulu 11am - 9pm daily)
Their special combination lunch was $4.15 for years.

Ono Hawaiian Foods (726 Kapahulu)
If you want pig instead of pork.  Wait outside to be invited in.

Maunakea Market Place Food Court (1120 Maunakea)

Shirokiya Department Store (Second level Ala Moana Shopping Center near Liberty House)  Hot cafeteria style lunch top floor.

FREE ENTERTAINMENT:

Hilton Hawaiian Village Friday night fireworks on the beach about an hour after sunset.

Fort DeRussy Museum (Closed Mondays)

Iolani Palace - If time does not permit waiting for the paid tour reservations, a free film is shown past the ticket counter.  Gift shop across from film has inexpensive historical postcards not available elsewhere.  Free Band concert at noon Fridays.

Sheraton Moana Surfrider - Celebrating 100 years in 2001.  A small museum room is on the second floor at the top of the glass doors to the room are opened.  Free 1 hour historical tours are available daily 11A and 515PM at the concierge desk.

CHEAPEST TRANSPORTATION:
The Bus - 4 day pass for $10, sold at ABC Stores.  Free bus schedules are available in racks at McDonalds, 2164 Kalia near Beach Walk and McDonalds 2476 Kalakaua.

CHEAPER TRANSPORTATION AIRPORT/WAIKIKI:  Instead of taking the bus outside baggage claim, get a coupon out of a THIS WEEK and use a pay phone.  Depending on your group size, a van, taxi or limo coupon rate will be cheaper and more direct than the monopoly bus.

BEST MAP:  The phone book on all islands.

BEST PLACE TO WAIT FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS AT THE AIRPORT:  The garden in the triangle area at the center of the terminal building, near the Aero Space Museum

CHEAPER ROOMS:  Some buildings on Ala Wai have much better views than those closer to the beach.  The canal, golf course, mountains and Diamond Head can provide spectacular views.
